EVENT
The Family of Nelson Mandela, BronxConnect, and the Christian Cultural Center are excited to announce the first annual Be SOCIAL For JUSTICE Gala: Honoring Icons & Innovators Advancing Social Change. This year’s event also honors the work of Nelson Mandela, in what would have been his 100th year.
The Social Justice Awards are presented in recognition of outstanding ability in the use of activism, advocacy, creative arts, design, education, social engagement and media, to advance truth and social change. We are recognizing members of the national and international community for their significant contributions toward peace, civil rights, equality, poverty alleviation, prison reform and social justice.

CO-HOSTS
Ndaba Mandela
Africa Rising
Following in the footsteps of his beloved and iconic grandfather, Ndaba Mandela has taken the torch – and ran with it. Today, Nelson Mandela’s legacy continues as Ndaba keeps its beacon of hope bright, fueling its fiery message that one person can make a difference. Thankfully for all, the legacy lives, as Ndaba was recently named one of the “28 Men of Change” by BET. Today, Ndaba is showing the world, through his actions and orations, that Nelson Mandela’s voice and message of freedom still carries and rings true.
Rev. Wendy Calderón-Payne
BronxConnect
Rev. Wendy Calderón Payne, the daughter of two Colombian immigrants, began her work with New York City youth in 1989; upon her graduation from Brown University. In 1999, at the height of a youth incarceration epidemic, the question was asked if South Bronx churches could form a comprehensive network to support these youth as they changed their lives. Rev. Wendy has developed BronxConnect as the pioneer community and faith based alternative justice program in New York City.
Rev. A.R. Bernard
Christian Cultual Center
Rev. A.R. Bernard is a visionary whose teachings have stood at the intersection of faith and culture making Christ accessible for people from all walks of life. Through his ministry, his church, the Christian Cultural Center (CCC), has become New York’s largest house of worship. With more than 45,000 active, engaged members, CCC has emerged as one of America’s fastest growing churches nurturing and serving its diverse members.
